â€œIf my dog is always clean and we don’t go out, they don’t need vaccines.”

Many dog parents think like this, and this is completely wrong.

Most of the time, our dogs don’t go to where the danger is but the danger comes to them.

Microbes and parasites can be carried into your home on your clothes, shoes, other pets, or even through the air in some cases.

Yes, regular vaccination may cost some money, but it will never be more expensive than losing your beloved dog.

To clear up confusion about vaccinations, here’s what you need to know.

Core Vaccines
(the most essential)

a. DHPPi+L2

Protects against Distemper, Hepatitis (Adenovirus type-2), Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza.

DHPPi (DA2PP*) First dose at 6–8 weeks, then seconds dose 10-12 weeks and third dose 14-16 weeks, then boasted annually.

and Leptospirosis (L2) –  taken with the seconds dose of DHPPi to protect against a bacterial disease that can also infect humans.

* First dose can be only DP then remain doses DHPPi+L2

b. Rabies

Should be given to all dogs starting at 14-16 weeks of age.

First dose at 14-16 weeks (usually taken with 3rd dose of DHPPi+L2, then boosted annually.

Protects against rabies, one of the most dangerous diseases, fatal to both dogs and humans.

Non-Core
Vaccines (given based on risk and environment)

a. Canine Coronavirus (CCoV) – protects against a gastrointestinal virus (different from COVID-19).

b. Canine Influenza (H3N2/H3N8) – for areas with confirmed outbreaks.

c. Lyme Disease (Borrelia burgdorferi) – for dogs in tick-infested areas.

d. Kennel Cough (Bordetella bronchiseptica, often combined with Parainfluenza) – for dogs visiting boarding facilities, training centers, or groomers.
